Process
Preparing and cleaning wood homes, roofs and decks is very important because if the oxidized and mildewed laden wood is not removed before applying the preservative, the wood will continue to deteriorate. You should clean the wood as many times as necessary to leave the wood free of all artificial blemishes. We recommend using Wolmans cleaner and restorer for this purpose. It is a non-chlorine based environmentally friendly and wood friendly product.
Preparation
- The wood needing to be treated should be carefully powerwashed with a pressure of 1,200 to 1,800 P.S.I. of warm 120 degree F water. This water temperature allows for easy removal of the damaged wood surface with minimal fraying.
- The wood should be allowed to dry for 48 hours, at which time the wood must be prepped for staining.
- The wood should be brushed and sanded to remove most fraying or splintering of the wood. However, the floors of all decks are left rough to help prevent falls.
The Application Process
After the prepping process, all exposed nails should be leveled and minor repairs conducted; and rough-railing caps can be belt-sanded. Then, apply TWP or Messmer's UV+ in this manner:
- mask off any areas that do not require refinishing
- make an initial application by low pressure spraying at 40-60 P.S.I. unti the wood fibers are saturated without having the product "puddle" on the surface
- apply a second coat approximately 15 minutes after the first and rub into the wood surface with brushes. This process is referred to as "two coats, wet on wet". It may be necessary to apply a third coat.
- remove masking paper
- clean windows and any metal or painted trim
- remove all debris and materials.
